Octopussy – Clichés galore
Star Movies has some kind of James Bond marathon going on. Tonight was Octopussy, and I thought I’ll watch it. Now, I don’t know if the 1983 movie led to the whole clichéd view of India in the rest of the world, or the movie was a reflection of it. Whatever, the case they were all over the place…
- Snake charmers
- Sadhu on bed of nails
- Fire breathers
- Sword eaters
- Hot bed of coal
- Auto rickshaws
- Elephants on the roads
- Crocodiles
- Safari in the jungle
- Wild and dangerous natives
- The Taj Mahal
- Palaces
…and then I stopped watching it.. not because of the clichés, but because I didn’t think it was a very good movie.

A cliche is usually something you say. A stereotype is a better word to describe what you saw. However, both are used interchangeably, although inaccurately.

Man, ‘Octopussy’ was awful.. the sad thing is Udaipur still tries to lure foreign tourists using the ‘a Bond film was shot here’ angle.
The new Bond movie is fairly decent though… at least no mind numbing nonsense like the vanishing car from ‘die another day’.

I thought many of the old Bond movies were awful.
I heard that the new Bond movie is good too. Haven’t watched it yet though…
And yeah, everyone who reads the post above please replace cliché with stereotype
