EC website crash

The numbers in the last paragraph of this news report on the EC website crashing indicates one of two things – the reporter who wrote it is clueless, or, there has been some serious loss in translation when the people at NIC explained the problem to the EC official quoted in the article.

The reporter also does not know his math. 80 billion hits in 8 hours translates to 2.8 million hits every second, and not 2800.

And what does he mean by 8.64 trillion hits? Assuming 1 billion Indians were all checking election results online, they should have gone to the website more than 1000 times every hour, or roughly one hit every 3 seconds, for each Indian.

And if the estimate (80.64 billion hits in 8 hours) were right, the EC has estimated for about 30+ times the number of hits Google’s gets per month. Quite ambitious! I wonder how they fixed it.

The numbers are all wrong. Sad part is that they could have easily handled the load they were expecting if the people who were involved in it knew what they were doing.
