Gmail faster in IE?

Not sure why, but I’ve noticed that Gmail is much faster in IE/Maxthon compared to Firefox. In general javascript heavy sites seem to be slower in Firefox. But, the no. of useful extensions available for Firefox make it hands down the best browser for regular use.

Update: One of the reasons for the slow performance was that an extension I use was forcing secure connections, which doesn’t help in speeding things up. But, even after I disabled it, the performance sill seems to be sluggish in Firefox.

Opera for free

I tried Opera for a few minutes many versions ago and the ad-bar ruined the browsing experience. That wasn’t the main deterrent – Maxthon was better. But, now that Opera is giving away the full version of their browser for free (only today) as part of their 10th anniversary celebrations, it’s time to check out the latest version. [Via]

Wired finds Greasemonkey

Wired has finally found Greasemonkey. The server hosting the script repository wouldn’t have enjoyed being linked from Slashdot and Wired on consecutive days.

Greasemonkey

One of the main reasons Firefox is popular, is because of it’s extension system. Firefox still can’t compete with Maxthon when it comes to features. But, an extension like Greasemonkey makes a strong case.
Greasemonkey is a FF extension that lets users change the functionality of a site by installing scripts. So, the content providers no longer have an absolute say in how their content is consumed. For example, the Customizegoogle site has combined a number of scripts written by many people and allows the installation of one script which results in a number of improvements, like bringing the Suggest feature to the normal search page and adding a ‘Delete’ button to the Gmail interface (Gmail really needed that one), and many others. The script repository has many many more very useful scripts and the contributions are pouring in. A separate site for the management of scripts is also in the works.
I thought it would be great to write a user script. But, I’m still learning Javascript, and so I took the easy way out and modified an existing script to skip all the ads on the ad-farm Indiatimes.com
Ad-block already does that pretty effectively, but the script is more generic. You can get the script here.
The best part is, I started a thread on the Forums, and some talented guy is almost ready with a like plugin for Maxthon.

Internet Explorer will finally get tabs

The Office Weblog points to a WinSuperSite preview of IE 7. Apparently, it’s confirmed that IE 7 is going to have tabs. Big news, but not unexpected. I can’t even imagine that Microsoft would release IE 7 without a  feature as critical as tabs, given that every competitor’s biggest selling point is the ability to browse with tabs. What would really be news is if IE 7 had an integrated RSS reader, something like Onfolio and not live bookmarks in Firefox. IE has a lot of catching up to do in terms of features and some which I feel *have* to be included are those like mouse gestures, a good bookmarking system, an intelligent password management system, ad blocking and basic ones like a search box. These are the bare minimum as other browsers are already there. Also, Microsoft specific features like better integration with Outlook can definitely be an advantage over the competition. I’m sure MS will look to tie in their own services like MSN Search with IE 7 and that is one area where other browsers will always have an upper hand, unlimited flexibility for the user. I really hope MS proves me wrong, but I seriously doubt it.

The IEBlog has more information, but nothing very specific.

Saving Internet Explorer

In an interview with The New York Times, Gary Schare, director of product management for Windows mentioned that he uses Maxthon and not Internet Explorer. I’ve been using Maxthon (formerly MYIE2) for a long time now, and feel that it definitely hasn’t got the attention it deserves. It’s a wrap on IE, i.e, it uses the IE engine, but, adds many amazing features to it. In my opinion it provides the best browsing experience. Yes, even better than Firefox. I won’t even go into the “but IE is insecure” argument here, because I believe simple precautions like using a good firewall, disabling ActiveX etc. should make that a non-issue. I am not a web developer and so cannot comment from that perspective, but, for the lay person who just wants to browse the web, the IE + Maxthon combination is excellent.

With Firefox market share increasing rapidly, I guess Microsoft will do something to stem the tide. Waiting for Longhorn to update IE isn’t an option, as it isn’t due for another two years. It would make sense for Microsoft to just buy out Maxthon and atleast beat Firefox on the features front. I’m sure such a move would slow down the mass exodus that we are seeing now. I think Firefox is a very capable browser and would have been using it right now had it not been for Maxthon.

Maxthon is free and can be downloaded from here.
